COTTA Review: Artisanal Gelato & Desserts in Tanjong Pagar

COTTA Review: Artisanal Gelato & Desserts in Tanjong Pagar

Getting to COTTA

COTTA is one of the newest additions to the bustling Tanjong Pagar food stretch. I love that it is so conveniently located; just opposite the famous O.BBa Jjajang and just a short walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT.

The entrance is a nondescript wooden door that is easy to miss. It doesn’t look like much but it opens up to this beautiful hallway leading up to the second storey shophouse. I really liked this touch as it added a little Alice-in-Wonderland vibe to the place.

Cozy Ambience

COTTA has a lovely design that really makes you feel at home. The colour scheme, quirky chairs and muted lighting all make it perfect for a chill evening. The high ceilings also make it feel spacious and not too noisy.

However, note that the seating space is fairly limited especially with safe distancing measures in place. We were there on a Sunday evening after dinner and were lucky to get a table for 4 almost immediately, but those coming after us had to wait about 10-20 minutes.

Decadent Gelato Flavours

Trust me when I say that you may well want to try every gelato flavour they have on the menu. They have something for everyone, from fruity flavours like Zesty Pink Guava & Muscat Grape Sake to twists on classics flavours like Dark Chocolate French Rose. There is also a mystery flavour of the day which was Earl Grey when we visited.

A single scoop is priced at $5 for regular flavours and $6 for premium flavours which are those that have a little asterisk (*).

COTTA also serves various tarts & ice cream sandwiches which we had hoped to try but many were sold out by the time we got there. These are priced from $7 to $11 and all sound very tempting with items like the Matcha Goma Cookie Sandwich and Dark Chocolate Sichuan Peppercorn Tart.

Cotta Desserts

Fluffy Waffles & Beautifully Smooth Gelato

We ordered a single scoop of 4 different flavours (essentially half the menu). By some happy accident, COTTA ended up giving us the waffles for free as they had mixed up our order and didn’t want to waste food. Fine by me! 🙂

The waffles ($7) were actually some of the best I’ve had. They are light and fluffy, not too sweet and perfectly crisp. There is some caramel sauce drizzled over as well which adds just the right amount of salty-sweetness without distracting from the ice cream. To think we almost missed this!

Cotta Waffles

The first two flavours we tried were the Sicilian Pistachio and Dark Chocolate Bourbon with Torched Marshmallows. We have tried pistachio ice cream in many Italian restaurants and gelato bars here, but COTTA’s version is hands down the BEST. It is just so creamy with the delicate pistachio flavour still coming through well.

The Dark Chocolate was rich and heavenly with strong notes of bourbon and perfect for those wanting something stronger.

Cotta Waffles

The next two were the Muscat Grape Sake and Mint & Brownies. The Grape Sake was an interesting one (in a good way!). I was pleasantly surprised that you can actually taste the sake, mixed with some Qoo flavour.

The Mint & Brownies was my personal favourite as I’ve always been a Mint Choc Chip fan. COTTA’s version switches out chocolate chips for generous amounts of rich brownie chunks which I absolutely love.

Cotta Waffles

Besides desserts, we ordered a Lychee & Peach Tea ($7) as well to share. It was decent overall and not too sweet but did feel a bit underwhelming for the price paid.

The Verdict

COTTA is definitely one of our new favourite gelato places and we will be back. It is really hard to say which flavour was the best as they were all so, so good. Instead, I’d say just try whatever you want as you can’t really go wrong and ALWAYS order the waffle. The seating may be a bit limited but it is definitely worth the wait!

Spent: $7 per person (1 scoop of ice cream + shared a drink, see menu below)
