If you are looking for laid-back, cosy café for a relaxed Sunday brunch, hit up Belo Cafe in the Upper Thomson area. Tucked in a corner a short walk down from The Roti Prata House, it remains one of the more quaint & quiet joints along the stretch, without the stress of crowds and queues.
Belo Cafe has MANY Brunch Options
The food selection is extensive, with brunch, waffle and pizza selections. The menu items are all refreshing takes on standard cafe fare, as you will see below.

First up was the Salmon Guacamole ($15) – which is your typical smoked salmon eggs benny with a dollop of guacamole to jazz things up. This made for a perfectly creamy bite. They are not stingy with the smoked salmon either, so thumbs up to that.

Next was the Mushroom Croissant Benedict ($15), which is certainly unique. This is made up of poached eggs and a generous helping of mushrooms sitting atop a crispy bed of croissant (“Western prata” as my dining companion referred to it). Everything is topped with a truffled, fragrant hollandaise sauce which takes the dish to the next level.
Overall, this combination was well thought out and delicious.

If you want what is, in my opinion, a value-for money option – go for the Wake & Bacon ($14). Why value-for-money? Because it’s a savory main as well as a dessert all in one. You get 3 strips of bacon, a fried egg and a whole half-slice of avo on top of a full-sized waffle with maple syrup.
The bacon and egg are pretty normal, but I just love me a side of avocado to go with anything.

As we move on to the sweet things, how can I fail to mention the French Toast ($10)? Consisting of two thick slices of brioche bread with a generous sprinkling of fruits and maple syrup to go along, this was crispy on the outside while still soft and fluffy on the inside.

Over-the-top Waffle Creations – Must Try!
Finally for one of Belo’s specialties – waffles! Aren’t these the most gorgeous waffles you have ever seen? There are many fancier flavors (Horlicks Horwaffles, Thai Milk Tea etc) but we opted for something simpler and less sweet, the Madagascar Vanilla ($13).
Belo really goes all out with their waffles. Ours was topped with one (huge) scoop of ice cream, a deliciously light macaron and fruits. The waffle itself smells amazing, has a springy bite and tastes great on its own as well. I can’t wait to be back and to try more waffle flavors.

The coffee is alright – normal cafe selection and strong enough so can’t complain. Coffee prices are fairly standard for this area, at about $5 for a latte and +$1 for ice.
Kudos to the barista for some really cute and unique latte art (bottom right). Let me know what you think it is – so far no one can figure it out and I’ve gotten suggestions like snail, butterfly, koala, squirrel and more.

The Verdict
Overall, this is great find and less mainstream/overcrowded compared to other joints in the area (for now). Prices are pretty standard, but food selection is more unique and ambience is definitely more cosy. Do give it a try when you are in the neighborhood!
